CLASS SERVICE PROJECTS

Again this year, every class and every student at New Vistas will be involved in some way in a community service project designed to provide our students with the opportunity to help others.

Mrs. Castine’s, Mrs. Crowder’s, Mrs. Esposito’s, Mrs. McSweeney’s, Mrs. Purdef’s and Mrs. Smith’s Preschool/PreK Classes, will be collecting items for the Child Crisis Center starting October 1st. The Child Crisis Center is an emergency shelter for children ages new born to 11 years old. It provides a safe haven for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected, or whose well-being is in jeopardy.

Mrs. Grismore’s and Mrs. McLean’s Kindergarten Classes will be having a book drive for the Reach Out and Read Program, part of the Southwest Human Development organization. New or gently used books for 1 to 5 year olds will be collected and donated to this Phoenix based charity.

Mrs. Rogers’ All Day K Class and Mrs. Hira’s/Mrs. Miller’s 2nd Graders will be joining together to participate in "Project Night Night". This service organization provides supplies for children entering homeless and crisis shelters.

Mrs. Beckman’s 1st Grade class is participating in a program she has titled "Got Socks?"  There are lots of ways to support the troops, from volunteering to donating basic items like toothbrushes, books, or soap. One item that is often requested is socks. "Socks to Soldiers" is an organization to provide socks to our soldiers serving around the world. Donated socks must be white, black or brown with no logos; a medium weight of cotton or a cotton blend is preferred. Students in Mrs. Beckman’s class will be collecting socks to donate to this organization.

Mrs. Bland’s/Mrs. Fleischmann’s 1st Graders will help the Arizona Wing of the Confederate Air Force. They are collecting items for hygiene kits (toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, wash cloth) to be distributed to homeless children attending the Children First Academy in Tempe.

Mrs. Holly’s 1st Grade Class will be raising money for the Holly Hope Foundation, a nonprofit organization that Mrs. Holly’s family has started to write, publish, and distribute story/coloring books to children’s hospitals. Mrs. Holly’s class will also be writing their own story. The stories are called "Georgie Stories" because they are written with Mrs. Holly’s family dog, Georgie, as the main character.

Mrs. Hibner’s/Mrs. Pearson’s 2nd Grade Class will be conducting a personal hygiene drive for an area food bank. Items to be collected will include toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, deodorant, hair brushes, combs and socks.

Mrs. Devine’s/Mrs. Randall’s 3rd Graders will join Mrs. Miller’s/Mrs. Randall’s 3rd Grade class to collect school supplies for the Children First Academy in Tempe which is a school for homeless and underprivileged children in the East Valley. This school goes to extraordinary lengths to fill the needs of homeless children. They pick up students from shelters and temporary housing to attend school each day. They offer meals and Character Counts programming, organize volunteer health and dental care, have clothing rooms, and organize food drives for families.

Mrs. Holmes’/Mrs. Pearson’s 4th Grade is once again working to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Phoenix. The students will be collecting aluminum can tabs to donate to this charity, adding to the 39,000 tabs the students collected last year.

Mrs. Shipley’s and Mrs. Trepanier’s 5th and 6th students will assist two wonderful organizations this year. In January, the students will volunteer to assist runners in the 6th Annual London’s Run. This run raises funds to help families struggling with medical expenses due to a sick child. In the spring, they will also participate with a team in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
